The 31th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS) was held at the National Convention Center, Hanoi, Vietnam, on November 1-5, 2010, with 459 participants from 31 countries /regions. The Conference was jointly organized by The Asian Association on Remote Sensing (AARS), Vietnam Association of Geodesy, Cartography and Remote Sensing (VGCR), and the Institute of Geography, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (IG, VAST).

China National Committee on Remote Sensing (CNCRS), as a member of Asian Association on Remote Sensing (AARS), also one of the initiators of Asian Conference on Remote Sensing, sent a large delegation for this 5-day symposium in Hanoi. Headed by Prof. Tong Qingxi, Academician of CAS, as well as Deputy Secretary-General of AARS,  together with Prof. Gu Xingfa, Director-General of IRSA, the delegation consisted of 32 delegates from 8 organizations including IRSA, National Astronomical Observations (NAOC), CAS, Wuhan University, Peking University, Guilin University of Technology, Hanzhou Normal University, Chinese Academy of Forestry, and Chinese University of Hongkong.

In this conference, Deputy Director of IRSA Wang Jinnian, on behalf of Prof. Gu Xingfa, delivered an invited report titled “Application of GEO System in China” at the special session for GEO Satellite Program, receiving lively discussion. Six doctoral candidates from IRSA, Peking University, and Chinese University of Hongkong also had brilliant performance in the sessions of oral reports and posters. Additionally, China delegation exhibited a model of unmanned aerial vehicle in the technological exhibition, attracting eyeballs of visitors.

Chinese delegates were invited to attend the General Conference of AARS, discussing the awards of AARS foundation, which was set up on the 30th ACRS under the proposal of CNCRS, 2009. The “Award of Innovation”, which was co-found by AARS and CNCRS, was confirmed and two winners for this award were selected in this Conference.

ACRS as the annual symposium of AARS, had been held 31 times since 1980, acting as a bridge to connect Asian scientists, and to promote communication and cooperation in the field of remote sensing, geographical information system and spatial technology. The 32th ACRS is going to be held in Taipei, China, 2011.
