The 17th Remote Sensing Conference of China was held at Braim Canal Hotel of Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, on August 27 - 31, 2010. The conference was organized by China National Committee on Remote Sensing (CNCRS), and was co-hosted by The Associate on Environment Remote Sensing of China (AERSC) , Hangzhou Normal University, and Institute of Remote Sensing Applications (IRSA) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Prof. Tong Qingxi, General Secretary of CNCRS, and CAS Academician, chaired the conference. Prof. Li Deren, CAS Academician, Prof. Xue Yongqi, CAS Academician, Prof. Pan Delu, CAE Academician, and Prof. Gu Xingfa, Director General of IRSA, also the chairman of Organizing Committee, attended the open ceremony and the following four-day academic activities. Other participators included more than 500 experts, leaders, and young scholars from 160 remote sensing organizations in different provinces.

Eight special reports for the conference included the following subjects: “LIDAR Technology and its Application”, “Remote Sensing Emergency Monitoring for Rapid Response on China’s Severe Geological Disasters”, “Advancement of  the Water Color Satellite Remote Sensing and its Application in Wetland Monitoring”, “Thoughts on the Development of Earth Observing Technology”, “Monitoring the Deformation of Large-Scale Man-made Linear Features---Urgently Demanded Key Project in China”, “Application of Hyperspectral Imaging Technology in Geology: Australian Experience and Global Opportunity”, “Application of High Spatial Resolution Remote Sensing Data in Yushu Earthquake Rescue”, “Application of Remote Sensing Monitoring in 716 Dalian Oil Pipe Explosion and Oil Spill”, Those important reports enhanced the total academic level of this conference, and at the same time stimulated lively discussion among remote sensing scholars.

The conference adopted different communicating and academic forms. 256 papers were submitted, of which mostly were written by young scholars, and 227 had full texts. 180 academic reports, concerning 28 subjects, and divided into 28 sections, were presented orally in one sub-venue. Three organizing meetings were held by Environmental Information System and Remote Sensing Committee, which was the branch of Chinese Society of Environmental Science (CSES) and the member of CNCRS, and Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Committee of Chinese Society for Geodesy Photogrammetry and Cartography (SGPC). Moreover, 9 academic meetings were held by 7 relevant organizations and committees.

Two sub-venues were set up for the conference. “The Sixth China Youth Remote-sensing Debate Competition---Imageinfo Cup”, hosted by The Associate on Environment Remote Sensing of China (AERSC), was held in one sub-venue where debaters from 20 delegate teams carried on 10 round wonderful contests. As a result Peking University Team won the team champion, IRSA team won the second place, and Wuhan University Team won the third place. Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping Team won the best cooperation reward, and Yao Yijing, the first debater of this team, won the best debater reward.

“Evaluating the Potential of National Mineral Resources---2010 Symposium on Provincial Remote Sensing Activities and Technology”, hosted by AERSC, was held in the other sub-venue where 46 delegates from 30 provinces exchanged experiences on their projects.

This conference attracted a lot of exhibitors. 17 remote-sensing enterprises attended the technological exhibition, where their platforms were surrounded by visitors. This technological exhibition was very effective for relevant enterprises to promote their products.

It was worthy to be mentioned that the welcome reception, hosted by Hangzhou Normal University, was lively and varied in program forms, and this provided harmonious atmosphere for the following agendum.

This conference is held successfully. On the one hand, a total of 23 media, including Xinhua News Agency, Guangming Daily, reported or reprinted this conference. On the other hand, it provided an excellent exchanging platform for remote sensing experts and scholars, and built a new environment for the harmonious development of remote sensing undertaking. The delegates said that they would look forward to meeting in the 18th Remote Sensing Conference at Wuhan, 2012.
